French Macaroons: The New "It" Dessert

Ever since Katie Holmes declared her adulation for Sprinkles cupcakes, the once simple, nostalgic treat became the hottest thing since the return of dessert-menu s'mores (the coolest comfort food confection since fried Twinkies). People were lining up to pay upwards of $4 for a single serving. Looking ahead to life beyond the buzz of buttercream, word on the baking sheet is that French macaroons are poised to be the next big thing. Just don't confuse them with their less sexy, coconut counterpart. L.A.'s almond-based delicacies are modeled after those of famous Parisian shops like Lauderee. Made with egg whites, they also fit the lower carb litmus test. We predict these sweet treats will grace the desks of mollified industry execs, and will be served at many a celebrity shindig in the coming months.--By Tara de Lis

Aarrgh! Nightlife editor Tara de Lis eyes Redwood Bar, Area, more

Redwood Bar & Grill sets sail
"This is one buccaneer babe who'd usually rather walk the plank than pay Hollywood prices for good grog in land-lubbing downtown. But this pirate-themed bar is kitschy fun, gentrified not Disney-fied."
Sam Nazarian's latest club Area
"On the downside, the door drama can be frustrating, the bathroom lines long and there's nowhere to sit down for free. Still, the old Prey space is now one of the best dance clubs to open since LAX."
Air Conditioned's second location

"Finally, somewhere to party on Lincoln without turtle races. Locals love it for drinks, eats and easy-access clubbing."

BottleRock uncorks in Culver City

"Check it out while waiting for a table at Ford's Filling Station around the corner, or on its own. Chef Jason Travi (ex-La Terza) makes great small plates."
